How to make your salary go further?

Teachers salaries have been a bone of contention for a long time. With the minimum annual salary sitting around the £22,500 mark, but weekly working hours often as high as 60, it would be fair to say that (in general) teachers are under paid for their work. Most teachers do the job for the love of it, rather than the salary, but this doesn’t mean they couldn’t be doing with boosting their salary in some way! If this sounds familiar and you want to stretch your salary a little, these are some ways you may be able to increase your earning potential.

Negotiate a better salary

Teacher’s salaries are often on a scale, so there is likely to be some room for moving. If you feel you’re not being paid enough for the contribution you are making, it may be worth opening negotiation talks. If you have already agreed and accepted an offer, this probably isn’t the best time to start negotiating. However, if you have been employed for over a year and you have consistently performed well, there is no harm in asking the question. You may get a negative response, but you may also get a positive one. You won’t know unless you ask!

Look for better opportunities

There is nothing to say that you need to remain where you are, as there are lots of teaching opportunities out there. If you are not being paid at the same level as other teachers at the same level and you have tried your hand at negotiating, it may be time to look elsewhere. You never know what opportunities might arise, if you take the time to look around.

Home Teaching

If you are able to spare the time on top of your regular work, another option which may be suitable and worth considering is home teaching. There are always students looking for some extra support and if you can offer this, you will find it a useful way to top up your salary. Most students will want their support outwith the usual school hours, such as evenings or weekends, which means it wouldn’t interfere with your regular job.

Online Support

Are you able to provide some teaching support, working from your home. If so, this could be a great way to improve your earning capabilities. Online teaching support is extremely common and there are many education providers you could register with to get notified about these opportunities. The good thing about providing ad hoc online support is that it is usually paid at an hourly rate, which is often higher than a regular teaching salary. Another plus point is that you can do it anywhere, as long as you have a PC/laptop and internet connection.

Although the salaries may not be the greatest for teachers, if you love your job, then you may find it to be worth it. If you want to top up your earnings though, try these options and see if you can make your salary go a bit further. It may be particularly worthwhile trying other sources of income if you are new to teaching and starting on the minimum salary. It can also be a good way to gain some additional experience.
